Cieszyn Old Town — monuments, craftsmanship and local sandwiches
From the rotunda on Poland’s 20-złoty note to decorated Cieszyn guns and local sandwiches. Explore Cieszyn’s historic centre through architecture, craft and everyday life.

Castle Hill and a banknote landmark
Start on Castle Hill with the Rotunda of St Nicholas and St Wenceslaus. Its image appears on the reverse of Poland’s 20-złoty banknote: compare the familiar illustration with the stone building.
The neighbouring Piast Tower survives from the medieval ducal castle. Check access to the monuments and viewpoint before visiting.
The square and three brothers
On the way to Market Square, notice street perspectives and townhouse façades. The square itself invites a pause to watch town life.
The Three Brothers Well recalls a legend about brothers meeting and founding Cieszyn. Treat it as a local tradition rather than a documented account of the town’s beginnings.
Craft becoming art
At Stary Targ 2, the Cieszyn Masters’ Room is associated with gunsmith Jerzy Wałga’s workshop. He makes cieszynki: richly decorated hunting firearms combining intricate metalwork, wood and ornament.
Confirm access to the heritage room or workshop beforehand. A visit does not automatically include meeting the craftsman.
These stops reveal different sides of the town: its ducal past, urban life and skilled craftsmanship. Leave time for the streets between them rather than treating the walk as a checklist. Compare the scale of Castle Hill with the smaller spaces around Stary Targ, then return to the square for a break. If you plan to enter the museum or workshop, organise the walk around their confirmed availability and leave the outdoor sights flexible.
A museum and a local taste
The Museum of Cieszyn Silesia at Tadeusza Regera 6 adds context to stories encountered in the streets. Plan its exhibitions as a separate part of the day.
For a food break, try Cieszyn open sandwiches, with options such as herring, ham or spreads. Check current outlets and ingredients. Find more outing ideas in our Guide and a base for exploring at VISLA Apartments in Wisła.
